Vale – Wal Cusworth (1923-2024)

Former club baseballer, Wal Cusworth, has passed away. Wal finished his innings recently,
falling two weeks short of his 101st birthday.

Wal played with the original Ormond Park Baseball Club from age 16 through to post World
War II. He was slightly built, with a good arm and sharp reflexes – perfect as a short- stop,
filling that position in Ormond Park sides for many years.
Their home ground was EE Gunn Reserve (still our home ground). In fact, the Ormond Park
Club built the original baseball grounds on EE Gunn (with a massive “borrowed” cable from
the cable tram depot, draught horses and carts). Ormond Park was formed circa 1928 and
morphed into Ormond Baseball Club in the 1940s. Today, it is the Ormond Glen Huntly
Baseball Club Inc.

Wal was conscripted into the Australian army late in WWII and spent part of his time in the
army baseball side. He travelled around the South Pacific, playing demonstration games
against the American servicemen.

On discharge, Wal returned to Ormond and trained as an accountant with the Gas and Fuel
Corporation.

His baseball career was cut short by family obligations and a great opportunity with the Ford
Motor Company. Wal rose to senior executive positions with Ford Australia and Ford Asia
Pacific.

Wal leaves three children – Ellen, David and Isobel – and a generation of grandchildren.
He leaves a great connection with many other Cusworth’s who had three generations
playing with Ormond and then Ormond Glen Huntly. Wal’s older brother Allan (an Ormond
BC Life Member), his son’s Neil and Greig, then Neil’s sons Cameron and Sean, all left a
piece of the family with the club.

In fact, OGH’s annual Best Clubman trophy is named the Cusworth Family Best Clubman
Award.

Wal’s funeral takes place on Friday 8 March 2024 at 11am, at the Gisborne Golf Club.
